The EMS, TSO, TSL scholars were all hurled onto the beautiful island of Pulau Ubin for a quick 3-day Outward Bound School programme.

We were put into out various watches, and I ended up in Tock Seng ‘Cow’. Along with me were my fellow overseas scholars: Zhengyi, Yanfen, Klement, Suzhen, Fauziah(Fuzzy), Caroline(Carol), John, Dian, LiangSi, Kavi. We had a great time!

Our course was a 3-day mobile course, as compared to the TSLs who did a residential course. We had to set out for a Kayaking expedition immediately on the first day.

Well, it was tiring, but lots of fun. We enjoyed the capsize drill, the paddling, and the singing along the way. People like Sharon and Minglei were singing like a pair of songbirds! We learnt many things about ourselves. That night, Suzhen feel slightly sick. We also have crispy rice for dinner! Ok, we weren’t very good cooks, we had to admit. We tried to be smart, and didn’t bring proper materials to build proper bashas. Well, it was partially my fault for not insisting it. Klement decided not to bring them and wanted to use the Ponchos for shelter instead. As the logistics IC, I should have known better. At least it didn’t rain, and the guys were gracious to let the ladies sleep in whatever shelter we had while we fed the wind, rain and mozzies. That night, we also had to endure loud blaring music from the Kelongs in Johor, hampering our very much needed rest.

The 2nd day, we continued our expedition through the swamps of Ubin on our kayaks. It was a good experience, save for the mishap I had. Me and Suzhen’s kayak capsized in the swamps and yea, it was embarrasing. My fault, I was not paying attention and we kinda ran into shore. We reached camp 1 at about 11, and savoured our lunch very much dearly. After that, we did a vertical ascent in the afternoon. We were all very tired, so we were pretty much dead. I was elected as the project’s “Director of Schools” for our “Fundraising project”. Weining was our Director-General of Schools, and Klement was the other Director of School. It was hard work getting everything in shape and planned for the events of the 3rd day, which was our project.

3rd day wasn’t very much fun for me as I didn’t participate as much. I was busy coordinating “fundraising efforts” to build our raft for launch. Pretty proud of myself for being able to get things done. Too bad due to inclement weather, we could not launch the raft. But well, we had a pretty decent closing ceremony, thought out by yours truly!
