If you could relate yourself to a character in a fiction book, who would it be and why? The character can be from any book of fiction, any genre, any author! Think through all the heroes, heroines, villians… and post the character you see that most closely resembles you under the comments of this post! On the other hand, feel free to do the same thing on your own blogs. It’s my brainchild, but hey, it’s for everyone! Don’t forget to explain why! I urge whoever wishes to contribute to this to do it after thinking through clearly what you would define yourself to be, because this is supposed to help you define yourself better, I guess.

To start the ball rolling, let me do the honors of starting.

The character I can most closely relate myself to is Jack Ryan, from the series of books written by Tom Clancy, affectionately known by his fans as the Ryanverse series. Why do I relate myself most closely to him? Well, there are a couple of reasons.

  1. No matter how hard he tries, he can never seem to get himself out of public service. Sounds just like me. I tried to shun the limelight of public service, for a while. It did work, but in my heart I knew it was not my calling. I needed something to work for. As Cathy (Jack Ryan’s wife, a surgeon) says, “Jack, do you think I would ever stop surgery work? No? Well, it’s the same for you darling.” Council, Council, ANSO, ICSS, OAAS, OAAS-YW, Excalibre, SPIRID… the list goes on I guess. Volunteerism? Nah, just self satisfaction I guess.
  2. He’s a man of honor. I value my word above almost everything, because I believe if you try to promise something, you have to keep it. Only exception is when there is a conflict of interest, and that’s another matter all together though.
  3. You may never be able to get everything in life that you might want, but you jolly well try hard enough to achieve it. There’s no hard trying a bit harder. Or harder. Or HARDER. You get the point.
  4. Boredom kills Jack, just like it kills me. I cannot stand not doing anything. I HAVE to do something. My brain can never seem to go on idle mode. I’ll just walk around and find something to do. Therefore, we are defined as workacholics.
  5. Jack Ryan was never a Romeo, like I was never one, and will never be one, I guess. Where art thou my Juliet?
  6. We are good appointees, bad election material. The way we both work is so nonsensical that we often step on people’s toes. I personally cannot stand inefficiency contributed by redtape, breaucracy, politics and bullshit. If you give me any of those, you are out of my team. I attack a problem at the root, and I will remove, without consideration, whatever causing the problem. And on the way, we step on people’s toes. That’s why I’ve rarely been elected to office. I’ve always been an appointed manager, someone who can get the job done without worrying about losing support.
  7. We both have good foresight and it keep us in good stead when planning. This allows me to look into a plan, and plan for contingencies, as well as failures. Some people get pissed at me when I look at their plans and tell them what might go wrong. Well, I’m blessed with the ability to see and anticipate better than some others. Better to be prepared than never.

So how am I different from Jack Ryan? Well, for one I know I can read people better than him. Let me interact with a person or a group of people for about a fortnight, I would be able to tell the group dynamics, personal affections, relations and behaviour of people. I am usually able to predict how someone would react to certain situations, mostly accurately. Jack’s a dork at reading and hiding his emotions. I’m pretty good at hiding I guess.

And of course, there are those in this world who would like to see me in Hell, no doubt… for I’ve done wrong to some people.
