After a year’s worth of bangs and swishes, smoke and steam, the Ministry of Home Affairs has decided not to make any amendments to Section 377(A) of the Penal code, probably known better for criminalising of homosexual sex. This was announced in the seating of parliament today.

One of the most contentious items during the feedback process centred around Section 377(A), which criminalises homosexual sex.

Even though the Government said this item was not up for change when it released the proposed changes last November, public feedback on this subject came in ‘emotional, divided and strongly expressed’.

The majority, said MHA, called for its retention.

Is Singapore’s society ready to accept open attitudes toward homosexuality? I doubt it, really. Even in an ‘open and liberal’ society in London, many such acts are frowned upon. It’s going to take a very long time. And it’s going to be a long road ahead.

I don’t believe there should be criminalisation, but that all said, it doesn’t mean I am for gay rights.
