You may not know, but sudden cardiac death is one of the leading causes of death in Singapore. Ok, you may know it better as a heart attack. It’s supposed to be more prevalent in ‘richer’ countries like Singapore because of the more unhealthy food we eat. All the char kway teows, hokkien mee and chai tao kways are all laden with lard and other  types of saturated fat. We happened to be at dinner last night at one of the Singaporean restaurants when we start to dream about proper home hawker centre food when one of us, a girl obviously, commented on how bad the health culture in Singapore was.

What health culture?

There should be more public education about healthy eating in Singapore.

I was bouncing around the internet looking for a reasonable car hire company to rent so that we could drive out of Athens and in Santorini. It didn’t look like we were going to find any good deals, especially since we were all under-25, thus requiring a Young Drivers Insurance required under EU laws. Insurance sure is expensive, 25 euros a day. Insurance vary, for example, Paragon Motor Club Auto Warranty, seems to give a much better coverage than the typical long-term coverage. To make it worse, none of us are holding International Driving Permits, except for Yun I think. Sigh. I think I’ll just ask the hostels there. Gone for next week or so.

I find myself enjoying the Beautiful Game more when there are some stakes involved, even though it’s a puny £1 I put in every few weeks or so when I have the time to catch the matches. Le Blues, Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge is about 10 minutes walk from my place, while Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium is across town just opposite the old Highbury. It was a London derby. I do a little football betting from time to time. This weekend has been a windfall, with the two big clashes of Man Utd vs Liverpool, and Chelsea vs Arsenal. I won a grand total of about £10, with a seed money of £2. Not too shabby, I’m about £19 up from the start of the year. It’s not compulsive gambling, or anything close to it. It just makes watching the game more fun.

No matter how good the odds, or how exciting the betting maybe, I always limit my bets to £1 per game, be it spread over 5 types of bets ( 5 x 20p ) or a simple single bet. Obviously you win some, you lose some. You spread the portfolio and minimise risk, exactly what they teach us in the Finance courses. We take risks in our lives, and it’s always a gamble. Gambling is not bad, it’s just something we do all our lives. The important thing is to be able to understand and manage the risks involved. More importantly, it’s about gambling with what you can afford to lose.

Well it’s that time of the year again! Chinese New Year! Traditionally time for me to do some gambling! We are kinda sad sods over here, with a pretty small community to play around with. No, we don’t gamble big time like we do at places like onlinecasinobluebook.com, but we play small sums for fun and the festivities. There is no fun in gambling without the money.

Mahjong’s been staple over the past few nights, with a couple of games of poker and other stuff. We (meaning me and Dar) had a huge seafood cookout over at our place. Our sort of celebratory dinner before LL goes home for The Big Day. Maybe photos later.
