Interlaken
Interlaken is a municipality in the Canton of Bern in Switzerland. The Aare River flows through the town. The town takes its name from its geographical position: between the lakes. Interlaken is located between Lake Brienz to the east and Lake Thun to the west. It's very well known as this is considered a main tourist stopover point. We arrived at Interlaken nearing the evening, and everything was closing. We dropped at the Interlaken Ost train station, which happened to be the wrong station. We had to drop at the Interlaken West station. So well, we took the next train backwards. Luckily the return train was only 8 mins away. Upon arrival, we started hunting for our B&B, looking forward to a proper bedroom to ourselves. We have been staying in hostels so far. If Zermatt was the epitome of the Swiss mountain view, then Interlaken would be in the epitome of the countryside view.
As I said, we arrived in the evening, so after we checked into "Sunnydays Bed & Breakfast", we went hunting for food. I asked Dave(owner of the B&B) where was a good place and cheap for food, so he pointed me up the road to a "nice little cheap" restaurant. Well, not exactly cheap as we all found out later. Food served was in the region of sF18 to sF32. So we decided to take a short walk to the town. Note here that in towns, the towns are basically town centres about the length of road from Hereen to Wheelock place. Well, we found very nice place for food. HAIL NOW! DROooooooooL before me! =)
For those of you who've heard about fondue but have no idea what it is... There are 3 main types of in Switzerland: Meat, Chocolate and Cheese. The one you see in the picture now is the meat fondue. Inside the blue pot (there in the picture) is OIL. Yes, O-I-L, boiling oil. Basically we put the meat onto the forks, and put them into the oil, and let it cook. In other words, high class steam boat. I'll hit chocolate and cheese fondues later when we eat them in Lucerne. We were lucky to be served by a chinese student working parttime there, probably more of an attachment. She was doing a hospitality degree in a Swiss university. I thought she was cute. Now, the next day we saw her on the street with a LV bag hanging off her forearm and a Parda coat, and EHRM. High maintainence girl! After dinner, we took a short stroll along the main street, only to find almost everything closed. So we headed back for an early rest (ok, 11pm wasn't that early). The next day, we set off for some sightseeing in the area. By train, we set off to Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald. Famed for it's landscape and waterfalls, these places were somewhere quiet and exotic.
After a quick day trip, we once again returned to Interlaken for the night. This time, we returned earlier so we could have a walk in the main street before everything closed.
Ok, now for the sad thing. It was here in Interlaken that we met our first major obstacle. Weather made it unviable for us to go up Jungfrau, one of the three major peaks of the Alps. Yes, it was possible for us to go up, but the thick fog would mean that we would barely see past our fingers. But missing it, we would also miss the Jungfraubahn Cog Railway, and the view of Jungfraujoch. We had to make a decision, to skip this and carry onto Lurcerne, or to try our luck and head up, and pray that the fog would clear. It was a painful decision to make, but we decided in the end to pass on the Jungfrau, and head onto to Lurcerne.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention, it's Easter here. And what a bad miscalculation we made... Why? Read on! click to view the pages
